The Nathan Hale Urban Farm is busy, busy, busy. Plant sales are a big part of their support and they are held throughout the year. Headed up by the Nathan Hale High School Horticulture program and supported by the nonprofit Sustainable NE Seattle, outdoor classrooms are happening and looking good.
With a good southern exposure along the greenhouse, all are working to get galvanized troughs and urbanite planting beds up and in to ‘grow’ mode. With the visit MC2 also witnessed a student and his project of building a ‘hugelkultur’ (no-dig raised beds that are different; they hold moisture, build fertility, maximize surface volume and are good for raising fruits, vegetables and herbs).
An education component thrives in this project and is also the goal of MCGO and their effort at the Meadowbrook / Seattle Parks site. All ages embracing the urban farming concept will make our community stronger and healthier. Whether you’re out for a walk or are curious to see how your community gardens grow, check it out!
