Waldorf H.S. operates at the Magnuson Park; their grade school, here in the neighborhood of Meadowbrook. Located at the very north end of the Seattle Parks site, the high school can be found near the small boats ramp and the indoor facility Arena Sports. Cascade Bicycle is also a nearby neighbor. A lot of action in this lake-bound site but the ‘indoor farmer’ class offered by Waldorf H.S. really ‘floats the boat’ for interesting, fun and a succesful learning experience.
Student Li and Instructor Ms. Tompot offered a tour. Their learning classroom is not big so a lot is happening in a small space that includes students at every phase of the operation. To learn, I purchased some delicious edible ‘micro-greens’ grown, harvested and packaged by the students.
From seed starting to packaging and everything in between there is no time to waste. There is a whole growing system that was donated by the downtown org, the Millionaires Club. A UV light system to get the seeds started, a holding tank for goldfish provides nutrients to the plants that are stored under indoor light until they reach their desired result. Every two weeks the harvest is packaged up and sold to school parents, administrators and friends. Lucky me! Another great food security project here in NE Seattle. Good work, Waldorf.
