The schools in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle, such as Olympic Hills Elementary, have a significant number of students for whom English is their second (or third) language – many from families that are refugees. Many of these English Language Learning students struggle with reading and writing and are behind their grade-level peers. We have worked with local English Language Learning professionals and the school staff to develop a program that connects vetted and trained volunteer tutors with 3rd-5th graders most in need of additional support.

With support from Seattle Parks’ Meadowbrook Community Center Advisory Council, Meadowbrook Community CARE began an after-school English Language Learning tutor campaign in 2012. The program was moved to the Lake City Community Center in 2014 and then to Olympic Hills Elementary School in 2015. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to pause the program initially, but with the support of Olympic Hills Elementary staff we were fortunately able to adapt to a 1:1 online tutoring format, to continue to strengthen and engage young scholars.

Participate: Normally, we have two volunteer tutor service days a week at Olympic Hills Elementary School in Lake City, with after-school programming from 3-5pm. Contact us for more information.
